Avalon Elementary is determined to prepare its students for the new millennium. In doing so, we have formed an innovative school design where children create a mini-city or microcosm of the real world. Each student has a role in running the Municipality that we call Avalon Kid's Town.

Young entrepreneurs produce goods and services, Peacekeepers keep the peace, Judges arbitrate disputes, Bank Clerks make change, and Reporters track down stories. All citizens earn wages in the school's micro-currency, Mariner Bucks.  Kindergarten through 5th graders earn Mariner Bucks for attendance, while 3rd through 5th graders earn additional Mariner Bucks for the performance of their jobs. Students then invest in product ideas, deposit and borrow money from the Avalon Kid's Town bank, and pay taxes and tuition as they are experiencing "daily life" in a working city.

Avalon Township will be implemented in Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Kindergarten through 2nd graders will encounter Avalon Township once per-month. While 3rd through 5th grade students apply what they learn "on the job" every Wednesday.

Avalon Kid's Town is operated in two sessions, fall and spring. During a child's career at Avalon Elementary, they will experience many opportunities within Avalon Kid's Town. Each experience has rewards that are immediate and tangible.  Mastery of basic skills becomes necessary to excel as a lawyer, banker, legislator or entrepreneur. Teachers find limitless opportunities to help students apply academic skills to "real life" situations.  Students in Avalon Kid's Town apply technology, prepare and analyze budgets, write business plans, work cooperatively to resolve issues, use critical thinking to assess government policies and argue briefs in court. Social and financial rewards transform students from passive learners to active participants in their own development. Self-esteem improves with each new sense of accomplishment. Students retain far more of their studies because they learn by doing. Through direct experiences, students come to appreciate the skills of their adult counterparts and the real life choices and decisions they must make.
